People involved with the Detroit Brewing Company.

 The following is a list of some of the prominent people involved with the formation and operations with the brewery, from its early years to it’s closing in 1949.

 

Martz, Michael, first president of Detroit Brewing Co.; born in Bavaria, Germany, Oct. 13, 1821. Brother of Frank and John. Died on Dec. 11, 1897. Michael, along with his two brothers, immigrated to Detroit in 1839. He married Apollonia Hommel on Sept. 23, 1850 at St. Mary's Church in Detroit. Michael was my Great-Great Grandfather.

Martz, Frank, first vice president of Detroit Brewing Co.; born in Bavaria, Germany, 1818. Brother of John and Michael. Died on June 21, 1902.

Martz, John G., first brewmaster of Detroit Brewing Co.; born in Bavaria, Germany, 1824. Brother of Michael and Frank. Died on May 18,1902.

Martz, Albert A., treasurer of Detroit Brewing Co. in the years prior to prohibition, vice president in the early post-prohibition years, president thru the 1940’s. Born in Detroit, June 14, 1867; son of Michael and Apollonia Martz; educated in public schools and Detroit Business University; married at Detroit, Feb. 20, 1900, Elizabeth Nagel. Had been identified since 1891 with the Detroit Brewing Co (established, 1868, by his father), and had been treasurer of the company since 1897. Died on May 29, 1958.

Martz, Charles A., secretary/treasurer of Detroit Brewing Co.; born in Detroit, Mar. 24, 1864; son of Frank and Catherine Martz; educated in public schools of Detroit; married in Detroit, Aug. 12, 1896 to Lottie Dust. Began business career in office of Detroit Brewing Co., 1881; became stockholder and director of the company and had been secretary since 1897. Died in 1938.

Martz, George H., president of Detroit Brewing Co. in the years prior to prohibition and the early post-prohibition years; born in Detroit, Aug. 23, 1857; son of Michael and Apollonia Martz; educated in Detroit public schools and Detroit Business University; married in Detroit, 1897 to Margaret Corbet. Had been connected with the Detroit Brewing Co. since the beginning of his business career, 1873; upon death of his father, 1897, succeeded him as president of the company. Died in 1957.

Martz, Louis Peter, chairman of Detroit Brewing Co. thru the 1940’s; born in Detroit, 1894, Died in 1986. Louis was one of my great Uncles.

Martz, Oscar A., president of Detroit Brewing Co. the last year it was open; born in Detroit, 1907. Died in 1993. Oscar was also one of my great Uncles.

Martz, Alfred F., vice-president of Detroit Brewing Co. the last years it was open; born in Detroit, 1898. Died in 1976. Alfred was my Grandfather.

Martz, Charles W, treasurer of Detroit Brewing Co. the last years it was open.

Kleiner, Herman, early brewmaster of Detroit Brewing Co. during the 1890’s.

Freimann, Andrew, early brewmaster of Detroit Brewing Co. during the 1930’s.

Stegmeyer, William F., last brewmaster of Detroit Brewing Co. during the 1940’s.
